How do you eat potatoes? Potatoes chips and potatoes stewed with beef are popular choices. But can you imagine that in the future potatoes will be served as a staple food (主食) on your table?

Potatoes are becoming China’s fourth staple food after rice, wheat and corn, according to the Ministry of Agriculture in January. This is a welcome move to make Chinese people’s staple food more balanced and diversified (多样化).

But why is potato the choice?

Potatoes are healthy and nutritious(有营养的). They are a good source of vitamin C and potassium (钾). A potato’s Vitamin C is as rich as 10 apples. What’s more, potatoes are low in calories, only three fourths of the same amount of wheat and corn. So if you are worried about your weight, you can try changing to potatoes.

Also, potatoes are easy to grow. They can be grown in north and south during winter; spring and autumn. The plant is also able to bear drought(干旱). With China facing water shortages, potatoes can become a safe and reliable food.

And Some products made of potatoes can be stored longer than other staple foods. Flour(面粉) that’s made of potato can be stored for as long as 15 to 20 years, according to Beijing Times.

With these advantages, the potato has long been a popular staple food in many Western countries such as the US and UK. They can be made into different foods including bread, cookies and pancakes.

While here in China, because of Chinese eating habits, the potato will be cooked differently. It will be made into noodles, steamed bread (馒头) and other staple foods similar to those made of rice or wheat.

So are you ready to have potato noodles or steamed bread for your next year?

Lego recently announced that they will start producing pieces from sustainable sugar cane. The toys, which will be indistinguishable from classic Legos, will also feature "botanical elements" like leaves, bushes and trees. Lego's current bricks are made from oil-based plastics. "We want to make a positive impact on the world around us, and are working hard to make great play products for children using sustainable materials," said Tim Brooks, vice-president for environmental responsibility at the Lego Group. "This is a great first step in our ambitious commitment of making all Lego bricks using sustainable materials.

George wants to join police

While many toddlers dream of being a prince or princess one day, actual royalty, Prince George, 4, has a different aspiration. In fact, although George is prepping to be the future king of England, he could have another occupation in mind for when he grows up. Speaking with winners of the Metropolitan Police Excellence Awards at a reception in Kensington Palace, Prince William, 35, revealed that his son has actually shown a strong interest in the police force. "He is obsessed, actually, by the police...cars, toys, everything," he said. George's love of the police is well-documented. During a trip to Denmark last year, William hand-delivered a letter to Santa on behalf of George, who had written that he wanted a police car for Christmas.
