i. Students will understand and identify ‘what Noun clauses are’ and ‘which clauses are the subject, object, predicative or appositive clauses’.

ii. Students will learn how to form noun clauses and point out the conjunction in each clause.

Teaching procedures

Step 1 Analyze the structure of sentences and find out the nouns and its function.

Lily likes music.

Lily, my sister, is a good girl.

Students can conclude: A noun can be a subject, object, predicative and apposition of a sentence.

Step 2 Point out the subordinate clauses and its function.

1. What he wants is a book.

2. I wonder if that’s a good idea.

3. I’m interested in who that tall man is.

4. The reason for his absence was that he was ill.

5. She had a feeling that she was being watched.

Students can conclude:

The clauses in these sentences have the same function as nouns.

They are called noun clauses. Noun clauses include subject clause, object clause, predicative clause and appositive clause.

Step 3 Formation of Noun clauses

i. Write down three sentences and point out what kind of sentences they are.

1 The earth turns round the sun. Statement

2. Will he be able to come? Question

3. Why have they not left yet? Special Question

ii. Put the three sentences above into the underlined sentences separately.

1.____________________________ is known to all.

2. _____________________ is not yet known.

3._______________________is not clear so far.
