Step 1 Lead-in

Four sentences:

It’s a pity that they didn’t come to my birthday party.

I think it necessary that we should learn English grammar well.

The problem is who is to pay and when we can start.

The question whether he is sure to win the game is hard to answer.

Tell the above sentences are which kind of noun clause.

Step 2 Noun clauses

Explain the noun clause and the functions of it.

在句中作主语 句子 主语从句

在动词、形容词、介词之后 宾语 句子 宾语从句

在系 / be动词之后 句子 表语从句

在idea, fact, news, hope, belief, thought, doubt等等名词后面, 常常 用that或连接代词或副词引导从句, 对前面的名词起解释说明的作用. 同位语从句

Step 3 More about usage of noun clauses

主语从句

主语从句是在复合句中充当主语的从句，通常放在主句谓语动词之前或由形式主语it代替，而本身放在句子末尾。

用it 作形式主语的结构

1） It+be+形容词____________________________+that从句：

It is certain that she will do well in her exam.

2） It + be + 名词词组( a pity, a shame, a duty …) + that从句:

It is a pity that we can’t go.
