Analysis of the teaching material:

The reading text is a speech given by Mr Johnson, a member of the International Olympic Committee, who is visiting a high school in Beijing. Some background knowledge about the history and the development of the Olympic Games and an introduction to some famous Olympic athletes are presented to students. The Reading strategy in this unit teaches students how to read and understand a speech.

This class is intended to help the students learn the Olympic spirit from the athletes, think critically about the positive and negative effects of hosting the Olympic Games for the host country and learn what makes a good speech to get prepared for writing a speech on their own with the help of the supplementary reading material.

Analysis of students:

The students are interested in the topic and have been required to do some research on the Olympics before the class. The difficult part is to get the students to summarize the Olympic spirit and think critically about the positive and negative effects of hosting the Olympic Games for the host country.

Teaching objectives:

By the end of the class, the students will be able to:

understand the great contributions the contemporary Olympics make;

summarize the Olympic spirit from the athletes and learn from them in the future life;

think critically about the positive and negative effects of hosting the Olympic Games for the host country;

acquaint themselves with the structure of a speech to get prepared to write a speech on their own.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1: lead in

Get the students to brainstorm some knowledge about the Olympic Games.

Activity one: The teacher uses a picture related to the Olympic Games in 2008 to introduce the topic: the Olympic Games and asks the students to talk about what comes into their mind when they think of the Olympic Games.

Activity two: The teacher designs a short quiz about the Olympics to enable the students to know some important information about the Olympics.

Step 2: Understanding the speech

Ask the students to identify the genre of the passage: a speech

help the students understand the structure of the speech and figure out the main idea of each part

Ask the students to read each part carefully to get the detailed information and learn to compare and summarize

Part A Greeting and introduction to the topic

The students are asked to identify the speaker, his identity, the audience and the topic of the speech
