Teaching procedures:
Step one: Lead-in
Share with students the sentence:“Reading without thinking is like eating without digesting.” and introduce the learning goals of this period.
Step two: Tasting
The students are asked to describe the cartoon after discussing in pairs.
(The picture describes a child who was desperate for a toy burst into tears when he was turned down by his mother.)------------The students are guided to use long and complete sentence to express themselves.
Discussion

If you were the mother, what would you do?
Reading a part of the passage
Each member in a group read a certain part of the passage
Read and discuss before the whole group cooperate and make up the whole pot of the story.
Help students remove some obstacles of reading by explaining some difficult words.

Help students to retell the story briefly.
Step Three: Chewing
Read the first two paragraphs and tell if the following statements are true or false.
The author came from a well-off family. (NO)
The children enjoyed doing housework. (No)
The mother raised her children in an unusual way. (Yes)
Read part two (para3-11) in pairs
The students are asked to feel the emotions through the tone
Ask some pairs to read the dialogue between the author and her mother.
Read the last part and fill in the blanks
My mother bought the beautiful basket as I ______. However, she kept it ________ and never could I get it _______ I saved up enough money. Weeks later, when I finally had the exact amount we'd agreed upon, I jumped for joy. Here came another_______ of events.
