Step 1 Lead-in

Get the students to solve some riddles and bring out the three riddles of Turandot

Show them a video about Turandot

Ask some questions:1. Who makes the three riddles?

2. Why does she do so?

3.What will happen to people who can not solve them?

4.Do you want to know the answers?

Step 2 Before reading

Since this reading is a review of an opera, so first of all ,enable the students to learn how to read a view of an opera. Ask students to read the reading strategy and summarize the contents that can be read in a review.

(1.the brief background information 2.the plot and characters of the story 3.the author’s evaluation and comments?

Step3 Detailed reading

Task1:the characters of the story (Turandot, Calaf, Liu)

Ask students to read this part and find out what he/she does and what his /her personality.

(Turandot: 1. to avoid marriage, she condemns the men to death, who don't solve the riddles 2. Seizes and threatens Liu and Calaf's father she is stubborn and cruel

Calaf: 1. falls in love with Turandot at first sight 2. Decides to solve the riddles so that he can marry her 3. says if his name can be guessed by sunrise, Turandot can also have him killed. He is intelligent and brave

Liu: 1. Protects Calaf' s father 2. resists telling Turandot Calaf's name 3. grabs a sword and kills herself She is kind and brave)

Task2: the plot of the story

From the knowledge of the characters ,we can the story takes on a classic love triangle.

Read para 3-7carefully and ask the following questions to finish the chart.
