Make students know why certain symbols represent certain countries.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 lead-in

Ask Ss the following questions:

How many countries are there in the world ? Do different countries have different cultures?

Have you ever had a chance to visit a foreign country and experience a foreign culture?

From which aspects can a country’s culture be reflected?

Show students some pictures and ask them to guess which countries they think of when looking at the pictures.

Step 2 Picture discussion

Ask Ss to look at the pictures on page 1 and discuss each picture in groups and then the teacher give some explanations.

Who are the people in the picture ?

They are Mounties, or the royal Canadian Mounted Police. They are also known as the RCMP

What do you know about them ?

The RCMP was originally called North-West Mounted Police, which was formed in 1873. In 1920, it was renamed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In the past, horses were used as a means of transport by the police in Canada. Now various modern facilities are used instead. The official motto of the force is ‘Uphold the right’. They are famous for” always getting their men”.

Ask a student to explain” always getting their men”.

What are the men in the picture ?

These men are beefeaters, or the Yeomen Warder of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London.
