Teach the students how to write a report about a historic religious site.

Teaching tools: media, powerpoint, whiteboard

Teaching methods: cooperation and exploration, task-based teaching

Teaching procedures:

Activity1 Fast reading

Ask the students to analyze the structure of the report and get the main idea of each part. And then ask one student to write his or her answer on the whiteboard for checking.

Part 1 (Para 1) A brief introduction of the white horse temple.

Part 2 (Para 2-5) The story behind the temple.

Part 3 (Para 6) The architecture of the temple.

Part 4 (Para 7-9) The importance of the temple.

Activity 2 Detailed reading

Let the students read the report carefully part by part and finish some related exercises.

1) Read Para 1 and fill in the blanks:

The White Horse Temple is located in Luoyang , Henan Province in the central east of China. Being the first Buddhist temple in China, it remains one of the most important temples in all of China.

2) Read Para 2-5 and put the following events in the right order of time: B

The name Honglu Si was changed into the White Horse Temple.

The emperor invited the monks to stay at Honglu Si.

The emperor Mingdi had a dream about a golden man.

The officials traveled westwards to Central Asia and arrived in what is today Afghanistan.

A few officials were sent to India to find more information about Buddha.

Two monks were invited to come to China.

3) Read Para 6 and try to find out the layout of the architecture of the temple:(ask one student to write his or her answers on the whiteboard for checking) 

The temple complex is centered around a south-facing courtyard that is shaped like a rectangle. On both sides are different halls and rooms where the monks live.
