The Double Ninth Festival
The "Chong Yang Festival" is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, and it is known as the Double Ninth Festival.
As for the origins, the festival dates back to the Warring States Period (475 - 221 BC). According to the yin/yang theory that forms a basis to the Chinese world view, yin represents the elements of darkness and yang represents life and brightness. The number nine is regarded as yang. The ninth day of the ninth month is a double yang day. Therefore, the festival is called "Chong Yang Festival". (Chong means "repeat" in Chinese.)
On the Double Ninth Festival, people enjoy a wide variety of activities. They customarily climb mountains, admire chrysanthemum/kr?'s?nθ?m?m/ flowers, drink chrysanthemum wine, and eat double-ninth cakes to long for good luck and a long life. The Double Ninth Festival is also a time for family get-togethers. It is an occasion to remember one's ancestors, the sacrifices they made and the hardships they went through. Often, family outings are organised during which people search to appreciate nature and to show their love and concern for family members and close friends.The Double Ninth Festival has the custom of wearing zhuyu, and therefore it can be also called “the Zhuyu Festival”. The zhuyu is the important symbol of the Double Ninth Festival. People think wearing the zhuyu plant on the Double Ninth festival enables them to drive away disasters ,like the chrysanthemum wine.
In order to raise people’s awareness of caring more about old people, Chinese government recognized ‘Chong Yang’ as ‘Old People Festival’ in 1989. Since then, many government units, organizations and street communities organize an autumn trip each year for those who have retired. At the waterside or on the mountains, the seniors will find themselves fully engaged in nature. Younger generations will show love and respect for their elder ones by offering chances for them to get close to nature, or sending gifts to them on this special day. Besides, the goverment provides food and supplies for old people in nursing homes, doctors offer free medical service, and many volunteers visit the nursing homes , talking with them, doing housework for them and helping them deal with some basic problems.
