Teaching Procedures:

Step 1. Leading-in:

Let Ss look at some pictures about Antarctic, providing some background information to raise students’ interest.

Step 2. Pre –reading

Present some photos of these great explorers and talk about the title of the text. Step 3. While -reading

I. Skimming : read through the text quickly . Afterwards, try to match the headings.

Para.1 Scott and his companions became heroes because of great courage.

Para.2~4 The return journey which was of great difficulty.

Para.5~8 Amundsen’s team won the race.

Para.9 The race to the South Pole was on.

II. Scanning : read the whole text more carefully, and identify whether these statements are true or false.

Scott and Amundsen started their journeys in the polar spring.

2. Scott’s use of motor sledges and ponies(小马) was a success.

3. Amundsen traveled more quickly than Scott.

4. When they got to the pole,scotte's team had a celebration.

5. Captain Oates went for a walk and got lost in a snow storm.

6. Scott’s last letter was to his wife.

III. Words Band : read the passage and make use of the strategies to guess the meaning of the following words, using a dictionary when necessary.
