Step 1 Lead-in
1 Show a questionnaire about the Antarctic and activate the ss’ background knowledge.
It’s probably the coldest place on the Earth. It must be very beautiful. It’s probably flat and boring.
The silence must be amazing. It’s an extremely dangerous place. There can’t be much wildlife there.
2 Play a short video about the Antarctic and introduce the characteristics of the Antarctic.
Characteristics: extremely cold, strong wind, two seasons (summer and winter), amazing scenery, rich resources, the window to other planets, and a key effect on the climate.
Step 2 Pre-reading
1. Show the students the title and the learning objectives.
2. Get familiar with some words.
Pick out the proper new words in the right table according to the pictures. e.g. on one’s way: 在……路上run out of: 用完break down: 破坏sledge：n.雪橇nationality：n.国籍cheerful：adj.高兴的patience：n.耐心preparation：n.准备hopeless：adj.无希望的shock：n.震惊
(Ss guess the words together first. Then read the new words together. )
