Step1: Lead- in
Greeting. Play a song and ask students to listen carefully. After their listening, I ask them the name of the song, the singers and their nationality.(The famous band is The Beatles, they are British.) Then, I will ask them “Besides these British singers, do you know any other outstanding people in Britain?”, show pictures of Beckham, Princess Diana, Hocking, Adele, Mr. Bean and Newton, all of whom are British.
“While talking about Britain, how much do you know about this country?” Ask students to have a quiz together. The first quiz: What is the full name of the UK? (Show pictures of the map of the UK). The second one: Which one is not related to Britain? (Ask students to choose the right picture.) The third one: What is the most important river in Britain? (The Thames River) Then introduce famous tourist attractions around or above the river. The last one: Which one is not in London?
Step2: Reading
Ask students: “After enjoying so many beautiful sceneries and delicious food, do you have a desire to visit Britain?”“ But when it comes to visiting Britain, what may happen to you? Maybe, you will come across different cultures. That is to say, you may experience culture shock. So, what should you know before visiting Britain?(Examples: people, nation, food, accommodation, custom, transportation, city and country life, education, attractions, weather, entertainment and so on.) These are only the tip of the iceberg , there are various cultures in Britain, some of which may greatly shock you. But don’t worry everybody, in Lesson1 Xiaojin will tell you how to deal with the culture shock in Britain.”
Fast reading:
Ask students to read the text as quickly as possible to pick out what are talked about in Xiaojin’s letter.(keys: humor, food, money, tipping, accommodation)
Learn the structure of this letter. Ask students to divide the body into three parts and figure out the main idea of each part.
Part 1: Greeting.
Part2 (para.1): Brief introduction to her life in London and warm welcome to her aunt.
Part3 (para.2-para.6): Culture shock and some suggestions
Part4 (para.7): An excuse to finish the letter
Part5: Signing off (Say goodbye and sign your name)
Careful reading
