The target students have already finished the compulsory course and got a general view of the learning of Senior High English. Their attention is to shifted from pure language learning like grammatical rules to cultural understanding, which is an abstract but essential stage of language learning. If students desire to further develop their English and prepare themselves for other future endeavors, they are to develop cross-cultural awareness, which is what they are poor at. Therefore, this lesson is designed to offer them a glimpse of the more advanced form of communication and a guideline of how to achieve successful exchange.

Teaching aims

(1)to get students to master some important words and phrases: explicit, transparent, congratulate...on..., convey, rigid, tight, on purpose, resemble, negotiate, approval, smile broadly

(2) to enable students to analyze the structure of a passage and learn some reading strategies for working out headings for paragraphs and thus improve their reading ability

(3) To promote students’ awareness of the proper use of body language and their communicative skills when they are communicating with other people, especially those from a different culture from their own.

4. Key & difficult points:

(1) to enable students to know the meaning and significance of body language.

(2) To promote students’ communicative skills in a non-verbal way

Task-based language teaching; communicative approach

Multi-media, blackboard

7.Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Pre-reading

(1) Show students a short video, which serves as a theme of this lesson.

(2) Ask Ss to look at the photos and ask them:

What kind of language are the people in the photos using to communicate?

(3) Ask Ss what the following different kinds of body language means.

(4) Learn the new vocabulary through pictures

Step 2 Fast reading

1. Ask Ss to read the text quickly and try to find the answers to the following questions:

(1) What does the title mean? (Body language speaks for itself)

(1) Ask Ss to read the text carefully and use the reading Strategies to choose a heading for each paragraph.

(3) What is body language?

It is a language without words that consists of __________, _______________ and ______________ that greatly add to—and sometimes even replace— spoken language.
