C. Topic: -- basic knowledge about the Mekong River and the process of preparing for a trip

-- the importance of appreciating and protecting our earth

3) Lesson type: reading (45 minutes)

4) Position of this period

-- It is the first period of the whole unit and the reading passage gives some detailed information about preparation of the whole trip.

-- The topic is closely related to the next class as Wang Dun and Wang Wei will start their trip in the next reading passage. In other word, this lesson lays the foundation for the follow-up periods.

-- The content of this reading passage in not that difficult. Most of the students can grasp the main idea of this text, so the main focus of this period is to enable students to have a deep understanding on some important sentences. Besides, students are also expected to learn some words such as journal, waterfall, which they can apply in speaking as well as writing.

Part 2 Analysis of the Students

1) Cognitive psychology:

Students at the age of 15 to 16 are self-conscious, curious, have a strong desire to learn and perform;

They also need to feel part of a peer group.

In this case, some sort of group work such as discussion is needed.

2) Knowledge basis:

Students of high ability have a vocabulary of about 2500 words, which will enable them to read independently.

3) Capability:

Students in senior 1 are also under the development of the ability to think critically and enjoy solving "real-life" problems.

In this case, teachers need to design some inferential questions and create a real-life task for them.
