Get familiar t o the usage of introducing words “that, whether；what, who, whom, whose, which, when, where, how, why” in appositive clause and be able to use them to refer to an abstract noun.·
Be clear about the fu nction of appositive clause: to further explain the content of the noun before it.
Be able to complete an appositive clause and make sentences.
Teaching procedure:
Stage1: Discovering structure
Step1: Learn about appositive and appositive clause through some pictures and related sentences.
Step2: Ss match the news with the pictures
1. The news that the National Football Team of China won over South Korea at 1—0 was true.
2. The news that we will move to the new campus makes us happy and excited.
3.The news that the movie will be on at the end of April is really exciting.
Step3: T intr oduces what the students are going to learn in this lesson.
Step4: T gu ides S s to discover the structure of the appositive clause by analyzing the sentence (The news that we will move to the new campus makes us happy and excited.)
Step5: Ss r ead th e news again and find out the content of the news and analyze the relationship between the noun ”news” and the clause.
news= The movie will be on.
news= China Football Team won over Korea at 1--0.
news= We will move to the new campus.
Step6: T guides Ss to summarize the function of appositive clause and the frequently used nouns in appositive clause. (news/fact/opinion/suggestion/ thought/fact…)
Step7: Ss fin ish a short passage by using proper linking word to fill in the blanks. Then Ss think about the three questions:
Is the meaning of the clause completed?
Does “that” have specific meaning in the sentence?
Can we omit “that” in appositive clause?
Stage2: Picture talking
Step1: T gui des Ss to describe a picture by combining two sentences together.
Step2: Ss dis cuss i n groups and describe the pictures, then T and Ss check the sentences together.
