2. The many useful expressions and sentence patterns, especially those used by the writer to introduce the many organic farming methods, can be of great help when students writing passages of this kind.

Ⅱ.Analysis of the students

After nearly one year’s English learning in high school, the students have known the different writing styles of English passages, including expositions. They can also find the topic of a paragraph, usually by locating the topic sentence or key word. They can also skim or scan a passage to get certain information and process the information to accordingly. What’s more, these students are quite cooperative in group work and willing to share their ideas, as well as turn to the teacher for further guidance.

In terms of thinking, the students need to be taught how to get the writer’s purpose, to sort out the logic of what they’ve read and to apply what they’ve learned into practical use like speaking and writing.

III. Teaching Objectives (comprehensive objectives)

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

Tell the problems caused by chemical fertilizers and the advantages of organic farming methods by locating related information

Conclude the structure of this “Problem-Solution” Exposition by finding the topic sentences of each paragraph, analyzing the logic relationship between paragraphs and putting the paragraphs in order

Predict the content of the passage by focusing the form of the title as an “or” question

Retell and apply the organic farming methods to problem solving by summarizing, processing and transforming the information.

Raise awareness of environmental protection and people’s health.

IV..Teaching Key and Difficult Points

1. Conclude the structure of the passage by finding the topic sentences and putting the paragraphs in a logic order

2. Understand and use the organic farming methods to design a healthy farm by discussing and presenting

V.Teaching Procedure

Activity One Warming-up

Show pictures of food, discuss what farmers need to grow food and lead to the topic “Chemical farming” and “Organic farming”.

[Purpose]To lead in the topic and warm the students up for learning

Activity Two Prediction

Predict what the text will talk about from the title. The title is an “or” question.

Possible answer: It might talk about the advantages and disadvantages of the two kinds of farming.

[Purpose] To predict the text to have a reading purpose

Activity Three Read for Structure

Step One Find the topic sentence of each paragraph and the key word of the sentence

Step Two Put the four paragraphs in a logic order with the help of their topic sentences
