Ss: Yes/No.

T: A hero is a person who is admired by many people for doing something brave or good. Today, let’s get to know some heroes.

Watch a short video.

T: First, please watch a short video. After watching, I have a question for you.

(After watching)T: What do you think of the college student in the report?

Ask some students to answer it.

T: I think he is a hero, because he risked his own life (冒着生命危险) to save another person’s life. He did a good thing. He is brave and warm-hearted.

Present a picture

T: Do you know this guy?

Ss: No.

T: But he is well-known in America. Do you want to know why? Now let’s read a passage about him.

Step2 Reading

1. Read the passage quickly and guess: Where does it probably come from?

A. a novel

B. a research paper

C. a student’s composition

D. a newspaper report

(After reading for a while)T: Have you finished reading? Is there anyone who has got the answer? (Ask a student to answer it.)

T: In fact, we needn’t read the whole passage. We can get the answer from the picture, the title and paragraph1. It’s just in the form of a newspaper report. The title is the headline and paragraph1 is the lead.

Ask students to read the following information:

When you read newspaper articles, you may only want to get a quick idea of a newspaper article and do not want to know all the details. For this reason, you might just read the headline and the lead. This is because the headline gives readers a clue about the content and the lead gives the most important information. It gives information that answers the questions Who? When? Where? What? and often also Why? and How?

2. Read the lead (paragraph1) to get the following important information:
