1. The Ss will read the summary and finish the blank filling, which are all about some key words.(to, addicted, it, automatically, which, mentally, effects, affects, Being, quit)通过课文概要填空,学生再次熟悉篇章内容,对本课重要词汇有初步印象。活动形式以学生活动为主。II. Revision: to answer some questions about the passageAsk the Ss to conclude the main idea and structure of the passage by themselves.

Ask the Ss to answer questions about the reading passage to better understand it.

Ask the students to learn about some key words, including the word derivation, conversion and rewrite the answers by telling everyone can be a magician of vocabulary.1. Read the passage again to conclude its main idea. Tell how many parts the passage can be divided.

The passage is mainly about ________. Part One is about ________. Part Two is about _________. (advice from Grandad; the purpose of the letter; a few suggestions on quitting smoking)

2. Answer six questions about the passage.

What happens to James? (Para.2)

How does one become addicted to cigarettes? (Para.3)

What didn’t Grandad know when he was young? (Para.4)

Why does Grandad give advice to James? (Para.5)

Is it easy for James to fight the addiction to cigarettes? Why not?

(He has become addicted to cigarettes. / In three ways: physically, mentally, and through habits./ He knew little about the harmful effects that smoking has on smokers and non-smokers./ Because it might help James to stop and strengthen his resolve./ No. Because it’s easy to begin smoking and tough to stop.)

3. Learn the usage of the words and their derivation. Time permitting, ask the students to rewrite a summary.

Homework: Finish more exercises related to the keys words learnt in class.Try to translate 5 sentences in at least three ways through finding replacements, changing the sentence pattern, and using different parts of speech of the same word.
