Teaching procedures:

Pr-reading

1. Ask students to enjoy an English song called proud of you to arouse the students’ interest and lead into my question Do you learn English by listening to English songs?

2. Show the students some pictures to help them review what they learned in the last lesson by asking and answering the following questions in pairs: How do they/does the girl/boy study English? etc. It’s more difficult than what they learned in the last lesson because the subject is he/she/they, so it’s also a challenge for students. They won’t get bored.

3. Show the students some pictures to present some new words such as look up, grammar, expression by asking some questions like What’s she doing? Do you learn English by studying grammar? How are they feeling? How do you know? etc.

Talk to the students to lead into the new lesson. Ask the students to look at the picture in 3a and guess what she is doing. And then tell the students that the girl wrote a passage called how I learned to learn English and ask them to guess how the girl learned to learn English by looking at the picture. Then naturally lead the students to look through the passage to get the main idea by asking Is your guess right?

II. While-reading

Ask the students to look through the whole passage quickly and answer How did the girl learn to learn English? to help them get the main idea of the passage.

Ask the students to read the questions in 3a and make sure they understand them correctly and have a prediction about this passage. Explain some difficult points to the students if possible. And then ask the students to read the whole passage and answer the questions in 3a so that they can have a good understanding of the whole passage.

Ask the students to read the second paragraph carefully and answer What did Wei Fen learn from watching English movies ? to help them get the important details and learn some useful language points.

Ask students to finish 3b without looking at the passage to check if they have understood the details and then lead students to find out the common structure do something by doing something to help students develop the habit of concluding the common things.

Ask the students to look through the whole passage again and tell the main idea of each paragraph to guide them to use the structure to write similar passages.

III. Post-reading

1. Tell students to create an interest in learning English such as watching English movies, sing or enjoy English songs, watch sports programs in English, Join an English club, keep a diary in English etc so that they can find their favorite way to learn English happily.

2. Find out some useful expressions. Such as an English movie called ..., fall in love with, the secret to... Look them up in a dictionary, a piece of cake, It serves you right etc. At the same time, present another meaning of expression by asking students to guess. This way can help students accumulate language knowledge.

3. Ask students to fill in the blanks in another passage written by me according to the passage in 3a so that they can have a better understanding of what they have learned.
