Teaching procedure:

Step I. Lead-in

Free talk.

“What are your problems in learning English?”

T: When I was a middle school student. I was afraid to learn English grammar. I hated it very much. What about you?

Step II. Presentation

Before you read

Look at the photo and 3a, and the title of the story on page 3. then answer the questions. Give students 2minutes to prepare.

Read the title, the first sentence in each paragraph and complete the table. Give students three minutes to do it.

Read the passage about Wei Fen and answer the questions. This time the teacher will play the radio. Students have to listen carefully and pay attention to the pronunciation. Then give them three minute to skim the passage and answer the questions.

Tips: Sometimes you can get main idea from the first sentence of each paragraph. Meanwhile, use skimming skill to find answers you want.

While you read

Read paragraph 1 and answer the question. Give students 2 minutes to do it. They should read the paragraph carefully.

Read paragraph 2 and fill in the chart. Read it loudly and thoroughly. Give them five minutes.

Read the last paragraph and complete the table. Give students two minutes to do it.

Do activity 3b. This time, I will play the radio again. Students should listen carefully and mind the pronunciation. Give them five minutes to do it.

Tips: If you want to get some specific information, you should read the passage thoroughly and carefully, that is, to scan the passage.

After you read

Read the passage again and fill in the blanks. They can check the answers with their partners. Give them 5minutes to read and finish the blanks. After that, read the article together.

Review some useful phrases. First, find them and read the sentences loudly. Then, do some translating exercises.
