Step 1 Warm-up

Greetings.

Lead the lesson by a short video.

Their foreign teacher Stevie is going to have a party on the weekend. She invite all the students to come to her party. Meanwhile she need an assistant to help her to lay the table and do some preparations.

So, boys and girls, could you please help me? If you were I, what would you do to leave Stevie a good impression?

Ok, let’s discuss it in group.

(Students discuss in groups. And then teacher ask students to talk about it. Teacher guides students to think what we should do before the meal, during the meal and after the meal)

T: So, we should arrive on time at first, and follow table manners during the meal. Then don’t forget to say thanks and goodbye after the meal. Right? (Teacher leads class to speak the phrases together.) So, it means that knowing the good manners will help you make a good impression, right? (Students) So, what will I do to leave Stevie a good impression? (Teacher leads class to speak the sentence together.)

T: So today we will learn about Table Manners. (Show the topic.)

Step 2 Presentation

1.Learn about the cutlery

T: First, let’s learn about cutlery. Who knows its meaning? (Student) Good, please read after me, “cutlery”. And what cutlery do you know? (Student) Very good. Now, please follow me to learn about a full set of cutlery, ok?

First, we need a plate in front of us, right? Let’s begin on the left. It’s fork. We have three kinds of fork here. They are salad fork, dinner fork and dessert fork. (Teacher asks students to read these words. And teacher shows the paper pictures to students and ask them to recognize them.) Could you please tell me which one is salad fork? (Students answer and put the picture on the blackboard and write the name beside it.) Yes, you are right. So what can we eat with salad fork? (Students) (The another two is shown in the same way. “Salad fork is only for salad, dessert fork is only for dessert, dinner fork is the biggest fork.”)

Here, I have a tip for you. The fork should be held in the left hand. So these forks are put in the left or right? (Students)

T: Next, it’s spoon. How many spoons do we have? (Students) What are they? (Students) They are dessert spoon, dinner spoon and soup spoon. (Teacher asks students to read these words. And teacher shows the paper pictures to students and ask them to recognize them.) Could you please tell me which one is dessert spoon? (Students answer and teacher puts the picture on the blackboard and write the name beside it.) (The another two is shown in the same way. “Dessert spoon is next to the dessert fork, dinner spoon is next to the plate.”)

Here, I have an another tip for you. The fork should be held in the left hand. So these forks are put in the left or right? (Students)

T: Next, let’s see knife. How many knives do we have? (Students) What are they? (Students) They are dinner knife and butter knife. (Teacher asks students to read the words. And teacher shows the paper pictures to students and ask them to recognize them.) Could you please tell me which one is butter knife? (Students answer and teacher puts the picture on the blackboard and write the name beside it.) (The other is shown in the same way. “Butter knife is only for butter. Dinner knife is next to plate.”)

Here, I also have an tip for you. You should hold the knife in your right hand. You must never eat off a knife.(Students)

T: Finally, it’s glass. It’s really important for drinking. How many glasses do we have? (Students) What are they? (Students) They are water glass, champagne glass, red wine glass and white wine glass. (Teacher asks students to read the words. And teacher shows the paper pictures to students and ask them to recognize them.) Could you please tell me which one is champagne glass? (Students answer and teacher puts the picture on the blackboard and write the name beside it.) (The other three are shown in the same way.)

T: It seems there are so many tablewares in the western formal table. Next, I will give you one minute to remember their position. And later I will invite one group to come to blackboard and put these pictures in right order. Ok? Here we go!

After 1 minute, teacher invites one group work together to put the pics on the blackboard in right position. Teacher and class check it together.
