Tropical Cyclones

Tropical cyclones are called typhoons in Asia, and hurricanes in North and South American. These storms go around like a wheel. They have wind speeds of 60 kph or more. They can be very destructive.

When scientists discover a true hurricane, they give it a name. They can use either a man’s or woman’s name. Why should hurricanes have names? The names make it easier for people to keep up with information about a hurricane and its dangers.

Scanning for numbers/names/places/certain facts

The idea of the Red Cross came to Henri Dunant, a Swiss banker, in 1859. On a hot June day of that year, Henri Dunant was travelling on business in Northern Italy. There he learned that about 40000 men were killed in a battle on June 24, 1859, and another 40000 were left to die for lack of medical care. Immediately Henri Dunant organized the local people to gather the wounded and care for them in homes and churches. These people became the first volunteers of the Red Cross.
