Resources:

WCE lesson 1 ppt, WCE key words sheet, WCU lesson 1 Worksheet, map book.

Procedure:

T: How many continents does the world have? What are they?

Today we will focus on one of them --- Europe.

T: What kind of map is this? This is the political map of Europe. There are more than 40 countries in Europe.

T: Maybe you don’t know all of the countries’ name, so let’s have a look at some of them first. Repeat after me please.

T: We have already learned that GDP means gross domestic products. It often regarded?as the best measure?of national economy.

T: What does the EU stand for?

The European Union is an economic and political union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. So the European Union got its own administration section and currency.

We can tell from the pie chart that the economy of Europe is stronger than other World Economies.

T: Also, the data of GDP per capita show that the European Union is almost three times than the world average. Why do you think China falls so low on the table even though it has the second biggest country economy in the world?

T: If we look deep into the Europe, these countries are the leading countries in GDP.

T: Take out your atlas, where are these countries located?

We call this region --- western central Europe. West Central Europe has been important to world history. It has influenced world culture, religion, and industry in many ways. The countries of this region have had many wars, but are now working together instead of apart.

T: Locate the bodies of water around the Europe using the map on Page66 and 72. Write them on the line we provided.

T: Do you know how many countries are there in western central Europe?

Find the ten countries’ name for these flags using your first semester map book on page36-37.

Match the numbers with their countries on the map. If the country is too small, you can use an arrow to point.

T: Could you tell some facts you already know about the countries in western central Europe?

T: According to the pictures, tell or guess the country name. You can choose the one you know.

Mozart, Rolex, chocolate, Andorra is located on the mountainous area, Liechtenstein is famous for its stamps, French perfume got world fame, tulips and windmills are distinguishing feature of Holland, German are crazy at drinking beer, Monaco is a maritime country, Luxembourg has the tradition of making steel.

T: The national flag is correct. Pick out the mistakes in the textbox. You can use the information in Geo-Stats on page65.

T: These are the four key nations of Western Central Europe. Rank them from largest to smallest in area and in population.

T: Western Central Europe is like the crossroad of Europe.
