Step 1: Pre-reading: Warming-up: Greetings

Lead-in (1)First the teacher shows some pictures of the Land Silk Road and Marco Polo to students and asks some questions:

1). See the picture, what things will you think about? Who is the people?

2). When talking about the silk road, who will occur into your mind? (Students can give the answers: Zhang Qian , Ban Chao, Marco?Polo, and so on.) Collect students’ answers, and encourage them to tell some story about the people related to Land Silk Road. (2) Then show some beautiful pictures about?Marco?Polo, and introduce some information to them. Picture 1: The picture of?Marco?Polo, and the book called?Marco?Polo?and the Discovery of the Word. Ask the question: Have you heard about?Marco?Polo? Can you tell us some stories about him? (He was an Italian traveler who lived in China for some time…) Let students answer the question and give some more information, some students could give some answers, some may not, but the object is to arouse students interest of the reading the context.

Step 2.While-reading 1. First-reading Students read the stories quickly with the strategy of skimming. Circle some new words .

2. Second reading. Let students read the text for second time, teacher can play the tape-recorder for them. Then let them finish two tasks.

1: Find out the information about?Marco?Polo?and fill out the following questions.

1 )How old was Marco Polo when he came to China?

2 )Which city in China did Marco Polo like very much?

3 )Where was Marco Polo from ?

4) How many languages could Marco Polo speak?
