Exert their imagination to create a dream robot in our school and report it based on the requirements.

Teaching focuses and difficulties:

1. Teaching focuses:

(1) Ss listen for gist and details.

(2) Ss design their own robots and appreciate others’ fruit.

(3) Ss apply the useful expressions learnt to design their own robots from different aspects.

2. Teaching difficulties:

(1) Ss may feel shy and lack of confidence in boldly expressing themselves in class. The teacher must be patient and encouraging in interacting with the students.

(2) The video material may be more challenging for Ss compared with the exam listening and text listening Ss are used to. The teacher must find out where the Ss are having difficulty and give timely support to keep the students on track.

Teaching aids: ppt, student-worksheets, blackboard

Teaching procedures:

T and Ss talk about how robots influence our lives. To create an authentic situation and raise Ss’ interest in the topic. Ss can get interested in the topic. While-task Step 2 Ss watch the video for the first time and note down the key information to prove the cleverness of robots. To train Ss’ ability to listen for main idea and structure. Ss are able to write down important information relevant to the main structure. Step 3 Ss watch the first section of the video and finish Listening Task 1 on Worksheet while watching.

Ss talk about specific examples of robots helping human in our daily lives. To encourage Ss to use key verbs to identify and jot down the key information.

To encourage Ss to figure out the examples in daily lives and boldly express themselves in class. Ss are able to fill in the blanks with correct verbs. Step 4 Ss watch the second section of the video and finish Listening Task 2 on Worksheet while watching. To train Ss’ ability to gain detailed information with the help of signal words

To train Ss’ ability to analyze and make conclusion based on what they have heard. Ss are able to complete the blanks.

Ss are able to analyze the ways human used to teach robots. Step 5 Ss watch the CNN news about the bionic leg and find different aspects of it.

Ss finish the mind map on Worksheet while watching.

Ss retell the introduction of the bionic leg from the given aspects. To train Ss’ ability to listen for main idea and detailed information.

To train Ss’ ability to analyze and make conclusion based on what they have heard. Ss are able to complete the mind map with the guide of the T.

Ss are able to analyze different aspects of robots and consolidate what their have learnt. Post task Step 6 Ss are encouraged to design a dream robot in our school, discuss within the group, think about the robot in our school they want to design, prepare for a presentation centering on different aspects they have learnt.

Invite some groups to give a presentation on NanYang Robot Conference and others make comments on their performance. To tap Ss’ potential for creativity, and encourage them to involve what they have learnt into their creative ideas.

Ss can use their imagination to create a dream robot with adequate reasons.
