What are they doing?

1. Put the candle in the candle holder.

2. Put the candle holder on the dish.

3. Fill the dish half full with water.

4. Light the candle with a match or a lighter.

5. Let the candle burn for two or three minutes.

6. Carefully put the jar over it until the top of the jar rests on the dish.

Examine the water in the jar.

As the candle burns, it uses the oxygen in the air. When the candle stops burning, it has used up all the oxygen in the air. The water inside the jar rises. How far does the water rise? Because about one fifth of the air is made up of oxygen, the water rises and fills about one fifth of the jar.

◆interesting为形容词,意为“有趣的”,表示事物本身含有令人感兴趣的因素,可作表语或定语,用于修饰物。

【拓展】 

interested也为形容词,意为“感兴趣的”,用来修饰人。
