Sometimes up, sometimes down.

Hope creates a heaven for us,

Despair makes a hell for us.

-- An extract from Life is a Journey

Jack London (1876-1916)

What does Buck look like?

(P13)Buck did not read the newspaper. So he did not know that there was trouble ahead. Trouble for every dog with strong muscles and warm long hair, from Seattle to southern California. Some men had found a yellow metal in the Arctic darkness, and thousands of other men were rushing there. These men wanted dogs that were heavy, with strong muscles for working and furry coats to protect them from the cold.

How does he respond to his new life ?

(P13) Buck lived in a big house in a sunny valley in California which was owned by Judge Miller. And Buck ruled over it all. He was born there and had lived there for the four years of his life. There were many other dogs, but they lived together in the kennels, or inside the house. But Buck was neither a house dog nor kennel dog. The whole of Judge Miller’s land was his. Buck was king—king over all the creeping, crawling, flying things of Judge Miller’s lands, humans included.

What is Buck’s life like in California?

(P21)Buck’s first day on the beach was like a nightmare. Every hour was filled with shock or surprise. He had been suddenly removed from civilization and thrown into the heart of a primitive world. Here there was neither peace nor rest, nor a moment’s safety. It was essential to be constantly alert, for these dogs and men were not town dogs and men. They were savages, all of them, who knew no law but the law of club and tooth.
