Step 1: Warm-up
1.?The teacher show the students?a calendar and teach the new word : festival.
Pay attention to October 1st then ask:
Look, it is red. Can you tell me why? Yes, because it is a festival.
What festival do you know? Can you tell me some festivals in China?
2. Show the students the date October 31st:
This is also a festival. It is Halloween.
Halloween is a festival of Western countries. It comes on 31 October. In some ways I think it’s a funny day for children because they have lots of interesting activities to do, such as dressing themselves up like ghosts. Look, just like what Hobo is doing. Ask the students to open the book and turn to page 56, show the students the third picture in the comic strip.
Step 2: Presentation:
1. Help the students learn more about Halloween through the 4 pictures in the comic strip.
Ask: What is Hobo doing? Yes, he is dressing himself up as a ghost. Teach ghost, dress up and Monkey King.
Ask: Why is Hobo dressing himself up as a ghost? Because it’s Halloween today. People always celebrate this festival by dressing up, having a party, eating nice food, singing and dancing. Teach celebrate.
2. Eddie and Hobo are celebrating Halloween. Are they happy? Please close your books and listen to the tape. Then answer my questions.
3. Listen to the tape and answer some questions:
(1) What does Hobo dress up as a first? (as a ghost)
(2) What does he dress up as later? (as the Monkey King)
Step 3: Practice:
Read after the tape and especially pay attention to the tones in the dialogue. Act the dialogue out.
Step 4: Welcome to the Unit
1. Halloween is a famous and important Western festival. Do you know other Western festivals? Yes, Christmas. It’s so popular that nearly people all over the world like it and enjoy celebrating it from 24th December to 25th December. Thanksgiving Day is also important to Westerners. On this day, people show their thanks to the ones who have ever gave help to them. It’s a meaningful day.
2. Foreigners have many festivals to celebrate. As you know, China is an old country with a long history, festivals are parts of our culture. We have many traditional festivals, such as the Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Day and the Dragon Boat Festival. Can you tell me something about these festivals?
3. Read the festivals and make sure that the students can read them correctly.
4. For different festivals people have different ways to celebrate. For example, when the Mid-Autumn Day comes, Chinese people will get together in a family group and have a big dinner. When night falls, we enjoy the full moon and eat a kind of special cakes in the shape of the full moon—moon cakes.
