A Using can, could and may

Step 1 Lead-in

T: Boys and girls, today we are going to learn Grammar of Unit 7. Do you know these sports? Can you tell me their names?

S: Swimming, playing football, flying kites.

Step 2 Presentation

1. Use can or could to talk about ability now and in the past.

(1) Describe what you see in the picture. Work in pairs and make up a dialogue according to the model.

A:Can you ...?

B:Yes,I can. / No, I can't

A:Could you ......?

B:Yes, I could. / No, I couldn't.

(2) Look at more pictures and use can/could to describe them.

(3) work out the rule

We use___can___, ___could___ to talk about ability(能力).

We use ‘can’ to talk about the ____present_____ ability.

We use ‘could’ to talk about the_____past______ ability.

2. Use can, could or may to ask for permission.

(1)Do exercises, read sentences and work out the rule 2:

We use “Can/ Could/ May” to ask for permission(请求允许)。

What are the differences(不同点) among can, could and may when asking for permission?

《1》We can use can, could or may to ask for permission.

《2》could is more polite than can. We use could to ask teachers, parents and other adults for permission.

《3》may is formal(正式的) and more polite than could. We use may to ask teachers, strangers or other adults for permission.

3. Complete the conversation.

T: Amy is talking with Mr Wu about her trip. Complete their conversation with “can”“could” or “may”.
