IV. Teaching procedures

Step 1 Revision &Lead-in

Ask some questions about ORBIS.

What is this charity called in English? (It is called ORBIS.)

What is the plane used as? (It is used as a hospital. It is also used as a training centre.)

How many patients were operated on during Dr Ma’s last visit? (During his last visit, 150 patients were operated on. )

Present the answers on the screen and get students to know this kind of structure--passive voice

Step 2 Presentation

1. Talk about voice

We have two kinds of voices in English.--the active voice and the passive voice.

We plant trees. (A) Trees are planted by us. (P)

2. Practice: judge whether the sentences are active or passive.

The lights were turned on by Tom.

The windows are cleaned every week.

Millie closed the door.

The TV was turned on.

The boy made a model plane.

A total(总数) of 8 questions are answered.

3.Work in pairs and discuss when we use the passive voice.

a. It is obvious(显然) who performs the action.

b. We do not know or do not need to know who performs the action.

c. The action is more important than the person who performs the action.

d. We can also introduce who or what performs an action in the passive voice using by.

4. The structure of passive voice

In simple present tense: S + is/ am /are +V-ed (+ by )

In simple past tense: S + was/ were + V-ed (+ by )

Step 3 Practice

1. Complete the sentences (Part A)

Look at the pictures and help them complete their notes using the words in brackets and the

passive voice. Add the word by when necessary.
