Teaching procedures:

Step I:

1. By answering 5 questions about ORBIS, students make the sentences in passive voice and try to summarize the structure of passive voice by themselves.

(1)Look at this logo, what is this charity called? (This charity is called OBRIS.)

(2)What is the plane used as? (The plane is used as a flying hospital and a training center.)

(3) How many patients were operated on during Dr Ma’s last visit? (150 patients were operated on during Dr Ma last visit.)

(4) Who are invited to learn new skills? (Local doctors and nurses are invited to learn new skills.)

(5)What problems can be cured by modern medicine? (Most eye problems can be cured by modern medicine.)

(6) What is still needed for the charity? (More money is needed for the charity.)

2. Present the example sentences on PPT and blackboard and let students find out the structure of passive voice “be done”.

设计目的

通过从welcome, reading等出现的被动语态的例句,让学生口头回答和课文相关的问题,学生从心理上没有生疏感,为初步总结出被动语态的基本结构be + done,做出了良好的铺垫。教师在黑板上写出典型句型,讲解主动语态和被动语态的概念,演变过程,加强学生理解。

3. Tell and explain to students when to use the passive voice.

(1). e.g. The lives of the patients with eye problems are improved.

The action is more important than the person who performs the action.强调动作承受者而不是动作的执行者。

(2).e.g. The thief was caught this morning.

It is obvious who performs the action. 动作的执行者是泛指或者不言而喻的。

(3).e.g. The problem was talked about just now.

We do not know or do not need to know who performs the action.不知道动作的执行者是谁或委婉避谈动作的执行者。

4. Learn how to use “by” and learn to change the active voice into the passive voice.

e.g. Many blind people were helped by ORBIS doctors.

We can introduce who or what performs an action in passive voice using by. Put by and the performer after the verb. 如果需要指出动作的执行者,可用“by”引出。
