Teaching Procedures:
Step 1. Presentation
Let students read and translate the following sentences, pay attention to the link words in these sentences.
① Norway is at the top of the list，while the US is at number 7.
② However，the challenges are still great.
③ The report shows that we are making some progress but that we need to make greater efforts.
④ Although developed countries give some financial help，they need to give much more.
Encourage students to list some other link words. Then show the definition of link words.
Step 2. Explanation.
Divide the students into five groups. Give them tasks which are shown in the study papers.
Give them five minutes to discuss in groups, then show their answers.
Group 1--- the usage of ‘but’
Group 2--- the usage of “however (1)”
Group 3--- the usage of “however (2)”
Group 4--- the usage of “although”
Group 5--- the usage of “while”
Step 3. Practice
Choose one word from but, however, although and while to fill in the blank.
