Learn the differences between past perfect tense and simple past tense.

Teaching analysis:

Students have learned the usage of present perfect tense and simple past tense, but they know little about past perfect tense. One the one hand, the two learned tenses can help them understand the now tense better. On the other hand, it is possible that they may get confused about these tenses.

Teaching difficulty:

Learn to distinguish past perfect tense and simple past tense.

Teaching procedures:

Step1. Lead-in

Present two pictures and ask students two questions:

Have you finished your homework?

You had finished your homework before you came to school.

Do you know him?

He is Lin Dan who is a famous player. He is called super dan by his fans. He had practiced badminton for 20 years by 2008.

Describe my experience:

I got up at six o'clock and left home at 6:40am. The bus had already left when I arrived at the bus station, o I had to wait at the cold station.I had waited for ten minutes before I got on the bus. Upon arriving at the school,I found that I had left my mobile phone at home. What a terrible day! Do you think so?

Step2. Group discussion

—How can we form the past perfect?

—had + verb-ed

Then ask students to reread “The curse of the mummy” and find out the sentences in which the past perfect tense is used.

It was the most important tomb that had ever been found.(L16)

After finding out the sentences, have students discuss when and how we use past perfect tense.
