Step 1: Lead in

1.show some popular pictures of movies and novels to lead students to the topic.

2.ask students to summarize the characteristics of science fiction.

3.guide students to freely express their feelings when they see the title“Journey to the Centre of the Earth”.

Step 2 :Reading comprehension--Journey to the Centre of the Earth

1.Lead students to summarize the strategy of reading a novel:the author, background, main character, plot and the ending.

2.Introduce Jules Verne and his famous works as well as the writing background.

3.Analyse the character pf the professor Otto Lindenbrock and Axel based on descriptions from the original. Ask students to make up a conversation based on the two men’s characters and then act it out.

(A possible version)

Professor: (He shouted at me in an emphatic way) “Axel! Axel!follow me!”

Axel : (I had hardly had time to move when the professor was shouting again.) Yes?

Professor: “What! not come yet?”

Axel : (I rushed into my master's room) “I am coming.”

Professor: “Axel, have dinner as quickly as you can and then pack up my luggage and yours. We are going to the center of the earth.”

Axel: “What? It's crazy! It's impossible! I...I...”

(Actually I could use many scientific arguments to argue with him. But I didn't because he was a strange person so that I had no choice but to obey his orders. )

Axel: “Y...Yes, Sir.”

Professor: “ Good, very good, my boy.”

4.Lead students to imagine “If you were Axel, and you have already been faced with plenty of difficulties, would you continue to sail sail?”

5.If you would like to continue the journey and want to survive it, what kind of qualities should you have?

6.Put these destinations in a correct time order; and then let students discuss which scene interests them most and introduce the surprising ending.
