“I ask Siri to turn on the lights or set an alarm in the same natural language that I use in day-to-day life,” Chaim Gartenberg wrote on tech site The Verge. “It doesn’t matter that an Echo can’t hear or understand it – it matters that you say it.”

With the increasing use of AI (artificial intelligence), forming the habit of being polite in everyday life is becoming even more important, as the British research company ChildWise found. In January, it published a report warning that people who become used to cutting courtesies (礼貌话) and giving orders to digital assistants might become rude when dealing with others.

Indeed, as German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel wrote in his 1807 book The Phenomenology of Spirit, one is worse off if they treat their machines in an undignified (不体面的) way.

And father of two Manu Kumar told Quartz, “One of my metrics (衡量标准) for determining (判定) how nice someone is is by watching how they interact with a waiter.

“In a similar way, even if the AI or tech doesn’t care about it, other people around us are going to experience how we interact with it.”

Helping web addicts

教育部下发紧急通知:预防中小学生沉迷网络。词数 405 建议阅读时间 7分钟

The internet has become a part of our everyday life. As a result, many people, including students, are finding it hard to spend their free time without the internet, which may be causing widespread online addiction (上瘾).

The Ministry of Education published an announcement on April 24, asking Chinese primary and middle schools to take action to prevent students from becoming addicted to the internet.

They were asked to raise students’ awareness (意识) of violent and vulgar (粗俗的) online content and the negative impact (影响) of online games. They were also asked to regulate (调控) the use of mobile devices.

The ministry also published an open letter to parents, calling for them to be more aware of this issue.

These moves come at a time when students have become the largest group of internet users in China. According to the China Internet Network Information Center, as of December 2017, as many as 196 million internet users in China were students, with 151 million between the ages of 10 and 19.

“Along with the development of mobile phones and the internet, many addictive online games and vulgar novels have appeared, leading to online addiction,” according to the Ministry of Education.

For example, in April, a 17-year-old gamer in Guangdong province suffered a stroke (中风) after spending 40 consecutive (连续的) hours playing King of Glory, an online game, according to China Daily.

But this problem is not unique to China’s young people.

According to a 2016 study by Common Sense Media, a US non-profit organization, 50 percent of US teens said they were addicted to the internet.

And in the UK, over a third of 15-year-olds spend at least six hours a day online, according to a 2017 study by the Education Policy Institute (EPI), a UK-based education research institute.

“I’m online for most of my waking hours and feel sick and depressed (抑郁的) if I lose access (接触的机会) to the web,” Malissa Scott, a student from Middlesex, UK, told BBC News.

However, this doesn’t mean that young people should be completely banned (禁止) from using the internet. “There are some benefits from using the internet; we shouldn’t lose sight of (忽略) that,” Natalie Perera, an expert from the EPI, told Xinhua News Agency.

Instead, “we need to support [young people] to understand the risks of how they behave online, and be empowered to make sense of and know how to respond to (作出回应) harmful content which they may come across,” Matt Blow from Young Minds, a UK-based charity, told the Guardian.

Internet tips

Here are some tips to help students get rid of their internet addiction, as published by The Telegraph:

? Set reasonable goals for when you can use the internet and when you should relax.

? Don’t spend as much time checking your mobile devices, and definitely (一定) don’t bring them to bed.

? Stay connected to the offline world. Visit book and music stores, or museums.
