Warming up

T: Hello, everyone. Today, we are going to appreciate an English poem--WHEN YOU ARE OLD,which was written by William Butler Yeats. First, let’s learn something about the background of this poem.

Appreciation for the poem

T: Ok, let’s start the first task--listen to the tape of the poem and fill in the blanks.

When you are old

When you are old and grey and full of _________ ,  

And nodding by the fire, take down this_________.  

And slowly read, and dream of the soft _________ ,  

Your eyes had once, and of their shadow _________.

How many loved your moments of glad _________,

And loved the sorrow of your changing _________.

And bending down beside the glowing _________,

Read the poems

T: This time I will ask you to read the poem emotionally with your partners.

Read the analysis( 分析)of the poem and translate the poem.

The poem has three stanzas (诗节). The first stanza describes a lovely and warm picture of an old lady, the poet imagines one day, when his beloved young lady is old, she will be reading this poem and feel the youth of herself again.: when you are old, my lady, and your hair have turned grey, you will be nodding by the fire, full of sleep. If you take out this poem and read it slowly and carefully, you will again see your soft eyes you had when you were young. The depth of your eyes will appear in your dream once again. The speaker imagines one day, when his beloved young lady is old, she will be reading this poem and feel the youth of herself again.

The second stanza is a contrast(对比) between other admirers and the poet: how many of your admirers love you is only because of your beauty and youth when you are elegant? However, there is only one man who loves your noble soul and your aging face. And “one man” refers to the poet:
