Designing purposes:

This lesson centers on the writing practice of some basic forms of poetry (related to Module 6 Unit 2 POEMS). The main focuses are: “the features of poetry”; “why people write and read poetry”; “writing some simple forms of English poems”; “appreciating poems”.

Various methods will be employed to achieve the teaching aims. Slides are played with music to show some famous poets and their poems. Direct questions are asked to arouse students’ attention. Examples are given to help students understand the structures of cinquain, list poems and Haiku. The form of competition is used to encourage the students to write and appreciate poems.

As for the improvement of research ability and the awareness of literature, students are encouraged to make further survey on poetry.

Instructional objectives:

After learning this section, students are expected to be able to:

--get familiar with some great poems;

--write some simple forms of poetry;

--appreciate some poems;

--promote awareness of literature.

Teaching aids:

A slide projector, a computer, some paper, a blackboard.
