Teaching Aims:

Knowledge aims: 1. To help the students understand and make use of the important words and expressions.

2. To help the students revise the use of adverbial clauses and their functions.

Ability aims: 1. To train the students’ listening ability and skills as well as oral English.

2. To improve their reading and summarizing ability

Emotion aims: To help the students to know everyone shall obey the law and never get involved in something illegal.

Important points:

Train the students’ listening and speaking ability

Teaching difficult points

Understand the listening material with some unfamiliar words and describe the stories on the book which some of the students may never hear of.

Teaching procedures

Step 1. Lead-in give three men’s names to let the students predict what might have happened among them, which may help the students understand the listening material better.

Step 2. Listening to the tape Play the tape for the first time and ask the students to read the question in exercise 1 and then play the tape through once without stopping. Give students time to complete the activity. If too difficult, ask them to cooperate with other students to figure out the answer.

Step 3. Checking the answering and explaining the answers Repeat step 2 for the other two exercises. If it is difficult to understand, stop the tape after the information needed to answer the question given.

Step 4. Speaking task Give some tips to the students and ask students to describe the three detective stories. Just describe when happened? how it happened? who might be involved in this? What ending was each of story? The student’s story is not necessarily identical with the original one, as long as the story makes sense.

Step 5. Reading comprehension

Write down the names of the characters in the story, then draw a relationship diagram between them.

After reading the story, answer the following questions

It is not a complete a story. So ask the students to guess what would be the ending of this story and explain why they think like that.

Step 6. Homework

Give an ending to this complete story. Not only will it help the student develop their imagination but it also is of benefit for the students to practice writing with some words in this unit. In order to help the students to complete this writing task efficiently and smoothly, I make use of the following questions to give them guidance.
