1. Lead-in

Show students three figures.

Q: Most of you have met them on the screen, but what do they have in common?

(Purpose: To get to the topic of detective and detective story)

Display pictures of Sherlock

Q: Do you know which one is widely accepted as the most famous one?

Q: Do you know anything about Sherlock Holmes?

(Purpose: To switch to the topic of Holmes detective story)

2. Reading

Para 1~2

Q:After reading the title, do you have some question to ask?

Q: Who appeared at the beginning of the story?

Q: What kind of thing connected them ?

(Purpose: to make use of title to arouse their reading interests;

to know the setting of the story so as to help understand the following paragraphs)

Para 3~5

Q: Who was Mr. Spaulding?How did Mr. Wilson describe Mr. Spaulding?

Q: Why did Wilson still employ Spaulding as an assistant?

Brainstorm: To find anything unusual or mysterious?

(Purpose: To activate their interest and improve analytical and critical thinking while reading)
