The current theory views reading as an interactive process. This process does not only involve the printed page but also the reader’s general knowledge of the world and of the language. During the process of reading, all these factors interact with each other and compensate for each other.

Based on the understanding of reading as an interactive process, an interactive model of teaching reading should be adopted to help students develop their reading strategies and increase their reading efficiency.

According to the new English curriculum, language classroom should be Ss-centered. And their comprehensive language competence should be developed by listening and speaking activities before , during and after reading.

Using language is an essential target of language input. Texts are the carriers of the language, which include various writing techniques. Therefore, it will be of great significance if students are able to use writing techniques they learn from texts.

Teaching material and learning condition

The analysis of teaching material

The reading material is from PEP NSEFC English Grammar Tools for Life . The Topic of this unit is to add more information. This passage is entitled Exercise, Diet and Weight. It consists of three parts: Americans' concern about their weight and the fact that some of them remain overweight, the reasons for Americans' obesity, and the damage caused by bad habits. The structure as well as details is not difficult to understand.

The analysis of learning condition

As Ninghai high school students, the Ss have learned something about exercise, diet and weight , so their previous knowledge can lessen their difficulty in thinking and comprehending. But they may find it challenging to figure out what prevents people getting satisfying outcomes.

Students in my class are easily activated by pictures and video clips and they like to air their opinions on familiar topics. So discussion with partners or in groups will be easily carried out.

Learning objectives

1. Language proficiency

By the end of the class, Ss will be able to

1) use the useful words and expressions properly such as commercial, overweight, obesity, anticipate, agricultural, glittering, lavish, desirable, get in shape, burn off, pick up, babble on, be swamped with, etc.

2) analyze the structure of the text by fast reading.

3) answer questions according to the details in the text.

4) add more information to sentences and compositions using adjectives, attributive clauses, participles, participial phrases and prepositional phrases.
