Step 1 Lead in

T: Are you interested in Maths? For people who study math, the next video is very special. Do you want to watch it ?

Now answer my questions:

In the video, what do you think the person is doing?

S:The person is making a Mobius Band.

How many experiments does the person do?

S: Three.

T: Do you want to do those experiments? In this lesson, we’ll learn this special band: The Mobius Band (narrow strip of paper or cloth)

What do you want to know about it?

Ss: what is a Mobius Band, who first made it, when did the person make it, where did the person make it, how did he make it, why is it called the Mobius band?

Step 2 listen and answer

Well, to answer your questions, we’d better listen to the tape first. Now, open your books,and turn to page 44. While listening, underline some key words in each paragraph.

What is a A Mobius Band ? It is a special twisted ring. (turn, bend)

Who? August Mobius .

T: what do you know about him? Which paragraph introduces him? Let’s read para3 together.

Ss : ( studied math, a mathematician , a German, first made the Mobius band in the 1800s, wanted to find a way to prove (show that sth. is true) how this band works with math)

T: so you know it got the name from its maker. It’s said that Mr.Bobius was crazy about maths, and one day, while he was taking a walk in the countryside, some twisted corn leaves caught his attention. And suddenly, he got an idea of the Mobius band.

Now let’s read the other paragraphs to know how to make a Mobius Band.

Step 3. Read and try (para1)

Read the first paragraph and tell me what this paragraph is about.

SS: how to make a ring.

T: So , try it! take any long piece of paper, glue the ends of the paper together. You have made a ring.

Step 4. Read and try (para2 )

Read the second paragraph and tell me what this paragraph is about.

SS: how to make a Mobius band.

T: So , try it! take any long piece of paper, twist the paper once(a 180degree turn) , glue the ends together . you have made a Mobius band.

Show me your mobius bands.

Step 5. Read and try (para 4 )

T: What’s the difference between a ring and a mobius band?
