Teaching Procedures

Purposes

Ss’ Activities

Pre-task

To help students review the plots of the story

(5 pairs of students) Build up 5 freeze frames based on the story.

Put the freeze frames in right order and talk about what the freeze frames are about.

While-task

To draw students’ close attention to detailed depictions of the characters’ behavior and manners

To help students fully understand the characters’ relationship and attitudes towards each other (when they meet again for the first time in years)

To focus students’ attention on detailed depictions of feelings and surroundings, which further help shape the characters

To help students further understand the characters’ emotions, especially those unexpressed or hidden in the discourse

To help the students gain an experience of story reading with drama techniques

Give stage instructions on how to play ‘Meeting in Washington Square’ according to the text and their understanding, using adverbs or adverbial phrases.

Read aloud the relevant lines dramatically in proper tones (and with some movements and facial expressions if possible) according to the instructions.

Find reasonable pace for each line or sentence in ‘Chatting about their families’ based on their understanding of the text.

Read aloud the lines at a reasonable pace (with appropriate pauses in a sentence and between sentences).

Rehearse and play ‘Saying good-bye at the bus stop’ in groups of four, and have a discussion on the performance.

Post-task

To get students further thinking about the story and the feelings of the characters through speaking

Do the task: Suppose you are Bill or Mary, talk about the meeting you experienced.

Assignments

Rehearse and stage the whole play (minor changes based on personal and/or collaborative understanding are welcome).
