Vocabulary: Learn to use the words to describe achievement about a scientist.
Attitude development: Form an idea that it is necessary to learn from the scientist and devote to the country’s construction.
Possible difficulties
1) The structure of the following sentences and the meaning of the underlined part in them:
a).He thought that the key to feeding people was to have more rice and to produce it more quickly.
b). He thought there was only one way to do this—by crossing different species of rice plant, and then he could produce a new plant which could give a higher yield than either of the original plants.
c).50 thousand square kilometers of rice fields were converted to growing vegetables and other cash crops.
Procedures
Step 1 Preparation
I. Check if the students have got the information about Yuan Longping signed as homework last period.
II. Ask the students to communicate with each other in pairs about the information they have got.
Guide: Some students may not fulfill the task because they have no necessary resource. It is better to arrange them to work with those who have got the information. Anyhow, this may take some time, but it will serve a good preparation for the coming reading activity.
Step 2 Reading 1: The Student Who Asked Questions on P. 23
Why: The students can do it easily because they have got the information about Yuan Longping in the last step. And they also can do it without problems as taking a glance of the picture on the left corner at the lift hand.
I. (Activity 1) Ask the students to have a look at the topic and guess what it is about.
II. (Activity 2)
1. Read the passage with the task in activity 2 in their mind and decide whether the statements are true or false within a pair and underline some difficulty if they have.
Reading skill: The students will learn how to get general meaning of the text
Suggestions: 1. Necessary time allowed as some of them are poor in this step.
2.Offer some time for the students to share the choices within the pairs. And then check the choices from the students.
Step 3 Reading and listening
I. Pay the cassette. They students are listening to the cassette while reading in their mind. Tell the students to pay close attention to the sounds of the new words and pauses in different meaning groups. Organise the students into the state of listening.
