How to help the students master the ability of reading diary entries.

Teaching procedures:

Step1 Lead-in

Play a guessing game

Ask students to name some building that could represent ancient civilization and tell the similarities and differences among them.

Step2 Fast reading

Ask students to go through the text quickly and try to find answers to the following questions.

1. What is one main similarity between Pompeii and Loulan?

2. Who was made director of the Pompeii dig in 1860?

3. Who is Professor Zhang?

Step3 Reading strategy

Discuss in pairs about what style the text is.
