Get students learning to use some reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, and so on while reading. The passage here is in the form of a newspaper article and is an example of how knowledge of first aid can save lives. Help students learn how to get some important information of a newspaper article by skimming and scanning.

As to the writing task, the teacher can first organize students in groups to discuss some questions after reading, such as:

1. The passage is useful. What have you learnt from it?

2. Can you deal with any such situation now? Why?

3. Do you think it is worthwhile to take a course in first aid? Give your reasons.

The discussion on the topic of first aid, as a post-reading task, may help students get the idea of what to write in the writing task.

Teaching emphasis:

1. Develop students' reading skills by extensive reading.

2. Help students write a letter with the help of reading and the discussion after it.

Teaching difficulties:

1. Enable students to learn how to use reading skills while reading a newspaper article.

2. Get students to understand and learn some difficult words and sentences.

3. Instruct students to make further thinking after reading to help finish the writing.

Teaching aims:

1. Enable students to learn how to use different skills to read different reading materials.

2. Develop students' ability of how to organize a text with the help of instructions.

3. Stimulate students' interest in learning about first aid.

Procedures:

Step 1 Warming up

Discuss the following scenario: You can hear a woman screaming. You find her sitting on the ground, bleeding heavily from deep knife wounds. Would you help her? What do you do?

Tell students: We are going to read a piece of news about what a heroic boy did when facing such situation.
