Robben Island is a small island in the south of the Atlantic with an area of 13 square kilometers. It is 11 kilometers away from the legislative capital of Cape Town, South Africa. Since seventeenth century, Robben Island has become the place where the colonists held up the leaders of the rebel movements. Since 1960, Robben Island has become a prison for political prisoners in South Africa, and has held more than 3000 black sports leaders and activists. In June 1964, Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment by the white South African government. He was transferred to the prison Powles moore until 1982.
