To help students appreciate the attractions of English play.

Procedures:

Step 1-Lead-in

Let students to answer some questions about Mark Twain and his works.

Step 2-Reading

Let students read the play while listening to the tape and answer some questions.

Task 1: Answer the questions.

1. How many characters are there in this scene? Who are they?

2. Where are they in this scene?

3. What was in the envelope? When did Henry take it out?

4. Did the characters change their attitude to Henry?

Task 2: Put the statements in correct order.

1. The owner doubted whether the note was genuine.

2. The waiter treated Henry in a rude manner.

3. The owner behaved over-polite.

4. Henry ordered a big meal.

5. Henry took out the bank note.

Step 3-Discussion

Let students read the play again and discuss in groups about the following questions.

1. Whose behavior changed most during this scene? Give examples.

2. What kind of person do you think the owner of the restaurant was?

3. Why did the owner give Henry a free meal?

4. What did the author want to express through this work?

Step 4-Appreciation

Let the students read the play again while watching the video and pick out the lines or stage directions they think best and give their reasons.
