Step1 The definition of clause and matrix sentence.

According to the meaning of Chinese character “从”, make the explanation of the definition of clause and matrix sentence. Let the students get a clear idea about clause and matrix sentence.

主句:主要的句子。

从句:从属的、次要的句子。

Step 2 Introduce the types of clauses.

List all kinds of clauses.Then lay stress on the subject clause and introduce the function of the subject clause.

Step 3 Observe subject clauses.

Show the followings on the screen. Then guide the students to analyze the sentence constituents of them.

The news surprised us.

What we heard surprised us.

It is obvious.

That he likes the film is obvious.

In sentence 1, the subject of it is “The news”. And in sentence 2, we use a clause “What we heard” to replace “The news”. So “What we heard” and “The news” have the same grammatical function.

Step 4 Analyze the subject clauses.

Part 1 Show the following sentences on the screen. Then ask the students to find the subject clause, pay attention to the conjunctions, sentence patterns of the clauses, and the predicate verbs of the matrix sentence.

2. What John wants to tell us is not clear.
