Step One: Lead in

Ask students about the English masterpieces they have read and then present some distinguished ones they may be familiar with.

Step Two: A brief introduction

Get to know some basic knowledge about the author and the novel The House on Mango Street.

Step Three: Reading- Group work

Read the extract Papa Who Wakes up Tired in the Dark and try to summarize the main idea of each paragraph with relevant supporting ideas. (Write on the blackboard)

Summarize the whole short story.

Step Four: Analysis

Analysis of major characters, language features, and figures of speech.

Step Five: Discussion

What do you think of “Papa” ? Do you think he is good at expressing his emotions?

Step One: Conclusion

This is a story about the growth, the vicissitudes and life in daily life. Love and death are with us everywhere. Cherish what you have and express your love while you can.

Step Two: Writing

If you were Esperanza, what will you say to him when your Papa returns home? Can you write a letter to Papa talking about your feelings and worries? Or anything you can think of.
