Extract: Papa who Wakes up Tired in the Dark
Your abuelito1 is dead, Papa says early one morning in my room. Esta muerto2, and then as if he just heard the news himself, crumples3 like a coat and cries, my brave Papa cries. I have never seen my Papa cry and don't know what to do.
I know he will have to go away, that he will take a plane
Notes
1. abuelito: a Spanish word, means “grandpa”.
2. Esta muerto: Spanish, equals to “He's passed away.”
Background information:
Mexico has been ruled by Spain for 300 years, so Spanish is used here.
3. crumple: crush sth. so that it becomes creased or wrinkled.
Her father is so sad that he doesn't believe the fact.
Her father is a strong and brave man usually, which in contrast shows how great the infulence of the death is.
The two similes (明喻) vividly describe how heartbroken her father is.
